film tv & new media / events / TORONTO - Ladies of Burlesque at The Royal

With its swirling sorbet of pastels and an infectious 60s French pop-infused score, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT—Jacques Demy’s dance-based follow-up to his beloved THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG—is a French New Wave masterpiece. Starring real life sisters Catherine Denueve and Françoise Dorléac, ROCHEFORT is Demy’s most enchanting film, and a major source of inspiration for this season’s dreamy box office hit, LA LA LAND. Featuring a Demy-inspired double act, this special French-edition of LADIES of BURLESQUE will have you pirouetting to your heart’s content!

Over the course of a weekend, twin sisters Delphine (a dance instructor) and Solange (a composer) attempt to flee their sleepy town for the bright lights and romantic possibilities of Paris, only to discover that their true loves (Jacques Perrin and Gene Kelly) are desperately searching for them. Romantic intrigue, missed connections, and more than a few broken hearts are mended to create a euphoric, yet surprisingly dark and brooding look at love and loss.

Inspired by the best of Hollywood musicals, Demy transformed the genre—paying tribute to films like GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, while also instilling a distinctly French flare. A beloved classic in France, ROCHEFORT is fun, gorgeous and features Deneuve and Dorléac at their absolute best!
