Le Centre National du Livre (CNL) has announced that they were giving out a three month travel bursary to the Ontarian translator Paul Eprile. The bursary was given out for Eprile’s project to translate the book Les Grands Chemins by Jean Giono. The novel, originally published in 1951 by Gallimard, poetically describes the Provencal scenery.
The CNL gives out this specific bursary to promote French books to non-francophone markets in order to put forward the best of french literature. Les Grands Chemins will be the third book by Jean Giono that Paul Eprile will be translating for the publishing house New York Book Reviews. Paul Eprile has always been fascinated by Giono’s work and his previous translations were all critically acclaimed for their moving, yet intelligent style. This translation will showcase the work of Jean Giono to a North-American audience, a public that has yet to discover him!
