Ottawa (October 19th, 2017) – The Canadian Film Centre Media Lab (CFC Media Lab) and the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France in Canada, in partnership with the Centre for Digital Media and La Gaîté Lyrique, are pleased to announce the second edition of Enterprising Culture, an international forum dedicated to the creative and cultural industries. With the support of BNP Paribas, Air France, L’Oréal Canada and Creative BC, the four-day forum will take place in Toronto on October 31st and November 1st, 2017, at Corus Quay, and—for the first time ever—in Vancouver on November 2nd and 3rd, 2017, at the Centre for Digital Media and the Emily Carr University for Art + Design. Enterprising Culture offers a space for reflection and discussion, and features international professionals and stakeholders; this year, the forum’s focus is on immersive media technologies.

In Toronto, the event will culminate in a pitch competition for ten start-ups—five selected from France and five from Canada, with all working in arts and culture-based immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Internet of Things (IoT) and 3D. One winning company from each of the two countries will be selected by an onsite jury to receive the Cultural Start-up Award, funded by Founding Partner BNP Paribas.

Enterprising Culture in both Toronto and Vancouver will invite high-level Canadian and French influencers in the creative and cultural sectors to discuss the economic, cultural, and social impact of immersive technologies in their industries. The French delegation will include Morgan Bouchet, VP Innovation & Digital Content of Orange, and Frédéric Josué, Global Executive Advisor of Havas Media, who are both founders of Uni-XR, the first French think-tank dedicated to virtual realities. Chloé Jarry, a producer at Camera Lucida, will discuss the origin of the immersive documentary THE ENEMY, which is a France-Canada co-production.

Ten finalists—representing the most innovative and promising start-ups in their field—will pitch the jury for the Award. This year’s Canadian finalists are Brinx Software, Albedo Informatics (LARGE), FilmTyme, LENS Immersive, and Janus VR. The French contenders are Audiogaming (Novelab), Histovery (HistoPad), Owl Perception (VRtuoz), Red Corner, and Gengiskhan VR. Each of the two winning companies will receive an all-inclusive start-up business trip (including travel and accommodation up to $10,000) for one week of intensive immersion and commercialization activities. CFC Media Lab’s IDEABOOST Accelerator will host the winning French company in Canada, while La Gaîté Lyrique will host the Canadian company in France.
