Call for artists: International Video Mapping Residency

                                                                                              

 

Presented by: The Rencontres Audiovisuelles (Lille-France), the Institut français du Canada, and Insula orchestra (Paris-France) have come together to offer a creation residency on video mapping inspired by the music of French composer Louise Farrenc (1804-1875).

Application Deadline: March 12th, 2025

Residency Period: April 6 – 12, 2025 (with remote production continuing until September 2025)

About the Residency:

This residency offers a unique opportunity for Canadian artists to create video mapping works inspired by the music of French composer Louise Farrenc (1804-1875). The program will provide educational support on video mapping techniques, making it accessible even to those without prior experience in this medium. The residency emphasizes capacity-building and artistic exchange between Canadian and French artists.

Who Can Apply?

Only Toronto-based artists and collectives may apply. Artists must reside within the greater Toronto area and be available to attend occasional in-person meetings in Toronto.

The call is open to artists working in video, animation (2D or 3D), or motion design. Prior experience in video mapping is not required but is welcomed. Eligible applicants include artists from video mapping, animated films, digital arts, and video games.

What to Submit:

  • Six artworks (video, film, or stills) or portfolio/reel, demonstrative/representing your artistic practice
  • Brief artist statement (500 characters)
  • Description of your art/process (200 characters)

Selection Process:

The selection jury consists of representatives from the: Rencontres Audiovisuelles, Institut Français du Canada, Insula orchestra and Nuit Blanche Toronto.

Presentation of New Works

Works produced during the residency will debut at the 19th edition of Nuit Blanche Toronto on October 4, 2025, running overnight from 7 PM to 7 AM on October 5, 2025. The event features approximately 100 installations across the city with an audience of over 1 million.

The new work will be presented in relation to the exhibition Collective Composition, curated by Laura Nanni, which explores how cities are shaped collaboratively t. This aligns with Nuit Blanche 2025’s overall theme, Translating the City, which examines the intersections of culture, language, identity, and place (for more information : Curatorial Theme – Nuit Blanche Toronto).

Residency Details & Artist Support:

The selected artist will receive:

  • A stipend of 2000€
  • Round-trip flights
  • Accommodation
  • Meals/per diem
  • Studio and research assistance
  • Collaboration with other artists
  • Professional photo and/or video documentation of the exhibition
  • The opportunity to showcase work at Nuit Blanche Toronto
  • Access to a dynamic, intellectual and creative community

Artist Responsibilities:

  • Participation in all residency activities (April 6-12, 2025)
  • Continued remote production from April to September 2025
  • Timely submission of project updates and materials
  • Active engagement with the Nuit Blanche Toronto presentation

Calendar & Key Dates:

  • March 7th, 2025: Application deadline
  • Mid March 2025: Announcement of the selected artist
  • April 6, 2025: Arrival in Lille, residency begins
  • April 7-12, 2025: Residency at Arenberg Creative Mine (workshops, presentations, and project development)
  • Mid-May 2025: Submission of animatic for feedback
  • End of July 2025: Submission of promotional materials (short description and visuals)
  • September 25, 2025: Final submission of broadcast files
  • October 4, 2025: Premiere of the work at Nuit Blanche Toronto

Optional: Artists may also participate in the Image Beyond the Screen International Conference (IBSIC) and the Video Mapping Festival from April 3-5, 2025, in Lille, offering additional networking and exposure opportunities.

Rights & Acknowledgments:

  • The artist retains ownership of the work.
  • By signing the agreement, the artist grants permission for Rencontres Audiovisuelles, the Institut français du Canada, and Insula orchestra to record, represent, and reproduce the work for research, educational, and cultural purposes.
  • Any communication about the work must include the following credit line: “Produced as part of the Video Mapping European Center residency at Arenberg Creative Mine – Production by Rencontres Audiovisuelles, Insula orchestra, and the Institut français du Canada.”

Rencontres Audiovisuelles de Lille: Rencontres Audiovisuelles leads the Video Mapping European Center, a key initiative for the video mapping sector that combines training, research, residencies, creative support, the IBSIC international conference, and the Video Mapping Festival. Insula orchestra: Founded in 2012 by artistic and musical director Laurence Equilbey, Insula Orchestra specializes in period-instrument performances of baroque, classical, and pre-romantic music. The orchestra integrates digital tools to make classical music more accessible while maintaining an ambitious educational and civic mission. Since 2017, Insula Orchestra has been in residence at La Seine Musicale.
