The second Manitoba edition of the francophone contest My Thesis in 180 Seconds was held online on April 15th.
Hosted by Jean-Éric Ghia, Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Manitoba and Honorary Consul of France in Winnipeg, the competition challenged 7 candidates to present their thesis work in 180 seconds to a 5-member jury.
For this edition 4 prizes were awarded :
- The First Jury Price,Main competition (400$), was awarded to Nolan De Leon, MSc Physiology and Pathophysiology student. He is currently working on the evaluation of circular ribonucleic acid expression profiles in biofluids for the prognosis and diagnosis of congenital anomalies
- The Second Prize of the Jury – Main Competition ($300) was granted to Véronica Coppolaro, a doctoral student in geography. Véronica is working on Passive Acoustic Monitoring of Marine Mammals in the Canadian Arctic: implications of a changing Arctic for their populations and habitat use.
- The First Prize of the Jury – Masters sub-competition (200$) was awarded to Noushin Ahmadpour, MSc Pharmacy student working on decoding the real language of the brain.
- The Second Jury Prize – Master’s sub-competition ($100) was won by Emily Garcia, MSc Biochemistry and Medical Genetics student who presented her work on the Achilles’ heel of advanced prostate cancer.

The My Thesis in 180 seconds competition is inspired by the 3 minutes thesis competition, initiated in 2008 at the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2012, the ACFAS (Association francophone pour le savoir), took up the concept in Quebec to extend it to all French-speaking countries.
The provincial contest Ma Thèse en 180 secondes in Manitoba was organized in partnership with the Embassy of France in Canada, the University of Manitoba, the University of Saint-Boniface, the Alliance française du Manitoba, the newspaper La Liberté, ACFAS, the Théâtre Cercle Molière, Radio Canada Ici Manitoba, the Secrétariat aux relations canadiennes du Québec.
