Event Details

The Comédie Française is on the screens of English-speaking Canada, not to be missed!

The second meeting of this screening series will introduce you to a staging of Feydeau’s play The Flea in the Ear (La Puce à l’oreille in french) by Lilo Baur, with the actors of La Comédie Française.

For its fifth production at the Comédie-Française, Lilo Baur takes hold of this incredible play by Feydeau, which has not been staged there since 1978. It brings together all the ingredients that have made the reputation of the master of vaudeville: burlesque and misunderstandings, to which he adds the theme of the double and an unstoppable ploy to make adulterous couples disappear.

Synopsis of the play :

In 1907, The Flea in the Ear signed Feydeau’s triumphant return to vaudeville. With its formidable construction and incredible fantasy, it is “a firework display lit above an anthill”, as the criticism of the time underlines, which is also overwhelmed by the address with which the theme of the double is renewed.

The main object of the upcoming confusion is a package opened “by accident” by Mr. Chandebise’s wife: straps sent from the Minet-Galant hotel. Stung, Raymonde convinces herself that she is deceived. She called on her friend Lucienne to write a letter to meet her husband in the same hotel. The accomplice was wrong because the letter written in her hand falls into those of her own husband, who in turn thinks he is outraged… Everyone will find themselves at Le Minet-Galant where the boy from the hotel, Poche, is a double of Raymonde’s husband. More than ever, La Puce à l’oreille exploits ingenious stage resources: an “emergency staircase” and above all a ploy to make adulterous couples disappear at the slightest warning.
