Translation assistance program for Canadian publishers

The Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Canada is offering two grants of 3 000 € to Canadian publishers who wish to translate the work of a French author already published in France.

This support concerns French-language works first published by a publishing house registered in France. They will be selected by the Cultural Service based on the following criteria:

– the intrinsic quality of the work and its importance within the context of French creation and thought;

– the engagement of the foreign publisher to develop and maintain a translation and publication policy in favor of French authors;

– the foreign publisher’s commitment with regard to the dissemination and promotion of the book.

► Terms of participation – Eligibility criteria

The Translation Assistance Program is open to any professional Canadian publisher outside the public publishing sector (or similar), as long as it publishes in English the translation of work written by one or more French authors.

Each publisher may submit no more than three applications per session. Applications must be submitted after the rights have been purchased and the contract signed with the translator.

All fields are eligible (except textbooks, technical works, or works of a practical nature – cookbooks, travel or personal development books, etc.). A minimum print run of 1,000 copies is required.

Only complete applications meeting the eligibility criteria will be considered by the experts’ committee. The list of documents to be supplied is specified at the end of the application form.

► Recipient commitments

The works supported must be published within 18 months of signing the agreement. In exceptional cases, a non-renewable extension may be granted, upon justified request made more than three months before the end of the 18-month period.

Any publisher receiving support must send three copies of the supported work to the French Embassy in Canada, within one month after publication.

The following mention must appear on the page opposite the title page: “The publication of this work was supported by the cultural service of the French Embassy in Canada”, followed by the logo of the French Embassy.

► Terms and conditions

Publishers will be informed individually of the outcome of their application. For each project selected, an agreement will be signed between the cultural service of the French Embassy in Canada and the beneficiary.

The French Embassy must be informed of any changes to the project, as well as of any delays in the completion of the work.

Application deadline: October 18, 2024
