Opening on June 30, 2023, “Oma-je” will be Laure Prouvost’s largest exhibition to date in North America.

Laure Prouvost, winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, is renowned for her immersive installations that fuse cinema, sculpture, tapestry and language.

The world-renowned French artist expresses her admiration for the women who took on the role of grandmothers and made a major contribution to women’s emancipation: “This exhibition is a tribute to all the women who opened doors for us and created a new society. […] My generation grew up thanks to the strength of these women.” Oma-je is a play on words in several languages. “Oma” in German and Flemish means grandmother and the word “je” is in French, so I’m a grandmother.

Laure Prouvost also celebrates her relationship with artistic predecessors who left their mark on the history of art through their innovative approach, such as sculptor Louise Bourgeois and film director Agnès Varda. The latter had a major influence on Laure Prouvost’s artistic trajectory, particularly in terms of artistic experimentation.

The exhibition includes iconic Prouvost pieces such as Grandma’s Dream (2013), End Is Her Story (2017), This Means (2019), Four For See Beauties (2022), as well as a newly commissioned immersive work entitled Ohmmm age Oma je ohomma mama, which will premiere simultaneously at Remai Modern, Saskatoon, and Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, in 2023.

The final installation focuses on the figure of the grandmother as ancestor and trailblazer. The work will transform the gallery into a theater of objects linked to memory, imagination and heritage. Visitors will be invited to travel back in time and lose themselves in the complex interplay between past and present, individual and society, and between modern and ancient concepts, relationships, materials and techniques.

Laure Prouvost’s exhibition Oma-je will be open to the public until January 28, 2024 at the Remai Modern Museum of Contemporary Art in Saskatoon.
