The Visiting Scientist from France @ Green College, UBC, Vancouver is a scientific programme launched by the Cultural and Scientific Office of the French Embassy in Canada, in partnership with Green College of the University of British Columbia (UBC) for researchers based in France. The aim of this programme is to facilitate and strengthen collaboration with academic researchers at UBC in scientific fields that are priorities for France and Canada, as defined at the first Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation between France and Canada in 2023.

The call for applications is open to the following themes:

  • Emerging Technologies: AI, quantum, societal impact, etc.
  • Health: One health, public health policy, genomics, etc.
  • Ocean and polar sciences: oceanography, biodiversity, marine ecology, etc.
  • Energy: renewable energy, net zero transition, sustainability, etc.

Programme framework

The laureate will spend the full-time, 3-month programme sometime between early September and early December 2025 on the UBC Campus in Vancouver, Canada.

The host research unit will provide the laureate with in-kind access to space, equipment and resources, as previously agreed on in the application.

While at Green College, the laureate will also regularly participate in the academic life of the College and will speak at or co-organize 2-3 interdisciplinary events (private and/or residential) during their stay.

Eligibility requirements

The Visiting Scientist from France @ Green College, UBC, Vancouver programme is open to all researchers with a permanent position at a French university or academic research centre or institute in France, regardless of nationality.

We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized for any reason, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, etc.

The scholarship

The support granted to the laureate will include:

  • return economy class airfare between France and Canada
  • accommodation at Green College, UBC (Guest Accommodation, double-occupancy possible, no children)
  • breakfast and dinner at Green College (5 days a week). The laureate will be financially responsible for other meals and expenses.

Non-European laureates who require a visa to enter Canada are responsible for the procedures and costs involved in obtaining this visa. As visa applications can take 2-3 months, laureates must begin the process as soon as the results are announced. They must update the French Embassy in Canada on the progress of their application.

The entire application must be written in ENGLISH.

  • Announcement of results: early March
  • Period of the stay: early September through early December 2025

  • A letter of invitation from professor at UBC that is co-signed by the research unit director / head (Vancouver campus)

For this first edition of the Visiting Scientist from France @ Green College UBC, Roenick P. Olmo, researcher at CNRS UPR9022 unit at the IBMC/Strasbourg spent 3 months at the Green College, UBC.
