Roger Chartier, professor at Collège de France, will be in Vancouver to attend the 2019 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at UBC.

  • June 3 – 3pm – 5:30pm : Plenary Session by Roger Chartier at Buchanan Building

Dr Chartier will give a plenary session on June 3 untitled “Translation and material culture in early modern Europe”, hosted by the Canadian Society for Renaissances Studies. In this plenary, Pr Chartier will address the issues of textual transmission through joint mediations of translation, textual mobility, and print culture in early modern Europe.

  • June 4 – 3:30pm – 5pm : Roundtable with Dr Roger Chartier at Allard Hall – ALRD 123 

The following day, on June 4, a roundtable with Dr Chartier and an international panel of scholars will discuss the interrelated topics of translation, print circulation, and “textual mobility” in the early modern world.

Roger Chartier is Professor at the Collège de France and Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. His work in Early Modern European History is mainly dedicated to cultural history and the history of the book, printing and reading. He has been lecturing and publishing on the relationship between the material history of institutions and the embodied practices which both animate and survive these institutions: in particular, early modern techniques of reading, disseminating and collecting printed information. Recognized internationally, Roger Chartier’s hundreds of articles and books have been translated into at least ten different languages.
